New Delhi: In the growing electric mobility trend, the 2-wheeler segment is taking the lead. Currently, around 8% of India’s 2-wheeler sales are electrics. It’s expected to nearly double, to 15%, next year.
“India will be a global giant in all sectors of electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030. In 2-wheelers, it will be much earlier,” Kamran Rizvi, Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, said at the 63rd SIAM Convention.
About the role of the Government support in the form of subsidies under the FAME scheme, Rizvi said that while some countries, like China, and the UK, are withdrawing or reducing EV subsidies, India is continuing to spend more money to support the EV industry.
However, the industry was also encouraged to collectively advance with a subsidy-free business model.
The Government is also promoting the adoption of Hydrogen technologies as part of its push for clean mobility. “At some point these schemes will come to an end,” he said.
Rizvi’s counterpart from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Anurag Jain, encouraged industry players to look at the larger picture of themselves as fuel/technology agnostic transportation solution providers.
